(The show)
We are in Portland on 11 November 1977 at the Cumberland City Center for the first live performance of the News Of The World tour. The audience present this evening is witnessing the first live performance of : We Will Rock You (Slow), We Will Rock You (Fast), Spread Your Wings, It's Late, Sleeping On The Sidewalk, I'm In Love With My Car, Get Down Make Love, My Melancholy Blues, Love Of My Life, We Will Rock You, We Are The Champions and Sheer Heart Attack.

We don't have a recording of this show, but we do have a video of the band rehearsing Get Down Make Love and Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy 1 week before this show and Freddie sounds incredible! These extracts appeared in the documentary The American Dream.

For the intro to the show being We Will Rock You (Slow), Freddie appears in his black and white striped outfit (a bit of a harlequin) and black leather jacket on a sort of cube with a panoramic view of the audience and a light shining on him.
A pre-recorded tape of "stomp stomp clap" and backing vocals from We Will Rock You would be played at the same time and Freddie would sing underneath the backing vocals to finally sing the first verse, and then the lights would turn to Brian May who would start to do the guitar solo to finish with the opening A Day At The Races and a stage covered in dry ice and the light panel rising to illuminate the band who would start to play the fast version of We Will Rock You.

Brighton Rock would now be played out completely.

I'm In Love With My Car would be played very similarly to the studio, despite the fact that the live version would be played fastly and that Freddie would joined Roger in the chorus.

The song Get Down Make Love would be played differently from the studio, with the middle section and the second verse cut out and replaced by a so-called 'psychedelic' section where Brian would have fun making deafening sounds with effects on his guitar and Freddie would make scary mimics with an effect on his voice.

Spread Your Wings would be played like the BBC version with the fast ending.

It's Late would be played exactly like the studio without any difference.

Sleeping On The Sidewalk would also be played for the first time but very differently from the studio version, as it would be sung by Freddie instead of Brian two keys above the original and a bit faster, unfortunaly it would be dropped after only 3 performances (Portland, Boston, Second Detroit)

Love Of My Life would be played very differently from the studio version, with Freddie accompanying himself on piano, while the live version would be played by Brian May on guitar and Freddie on vocals, with the music turned down a key.
